Not sure why, but I find

amusing. (On a scale of 1-10, where 1 is actually car-related and 10 is a Nibby post, I'd say this is about a 6)
Apparently Rabbits aren't so stupid after all.
On a side note, I've always thought the VW Rabbit was an awesome looking little car.

You are correct, of course. The VW Rabbit (MK 1) is an awesome looking car. They drove decently as well. I had one in college, until my sister decided to see if it would mate to the rear end of a Chevy Nova. The answer is, no.

Someone in my neighborhood has an old green Mk 1 convertible. I really want to get it from them but I also saw it sitting in the entrance of our neighborhood the other day and I'm a little concerned that it's a little worse for wear.

Brother : And Saint Attila raised the Hand Grenade up on high, saying:
"O Lord, bless this thy Hand Grenade that with it thou mayest blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy."
And the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals and fruit bats and large chu..
Maynard : Skip a bit, Brother.
Brother : And the Lord spake, saying:
"First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin.
Then, shalt thou count to three, no more, no less.
Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three.
Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three.
Five is right out.
Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."
Maynard : Amen.

This has me thinking about the COTD, and how expensive cars are today. That MK I Rabbit had almost all you need for good daily transportation. Decent room for four people, good luggage space in the rear hatch, great handling and, for the time, decent acceleration. I think the MK II Golf, which my dad bought after the death of the Rabbit, fixed a lot of the MK I's flaws, but was still pretty basic in terms of what it had. That Golf had no power steering, windows, locks or mirrors, and I didn't miss them at all.
Everyone bitches about how bad electric power steering feels, but very few writers state the obvious answer is to have manual steering on, at least, smaller cars. Get rid of power steering, mirrors, windows, seats and locks, and that sheds a decent amount of cost & weight. I wouldn't mind if the car I buy for my kids, when their old enough, is a new car with very little in the way of amenities. Less to break & fewer distractions. Make it safe & cheap, and I'd be a buyer.
